Grace followed Charlotte up the stairs to the loft above the bakery. As they got to the top of the stairs, Charlotte reached into her pocket for the keys and turned and smiled excitedly at Grace.
“I hope you like it okay. It may be a little musty but I can just open the windows and fix that no problem.” Charlotte said, smiling.
Stepping into the loft, Charlotte flicked on the light and turned to hand Grace the keys. Standing awkwardly in the doorway, Grace could see that it was a beautiful loft. Open and airy, full of light and beautiful furnishings. But Grace felt uncomfortable. She had just met Charlotte and she didn’t know what to do here. Should she just follow her in?
“Feel free to look around while I get some windows open and get some fresh air in here.” Charlotte said crossing the room to open the closest window. Walking back across the room, Charlotte noticed that Grace was still standing outside the door.
“Oh, sweetie. It’s okay.” Charlotte said, smiling encouragingly at Grace. “Don’t be so shy. This is your home. Take a look around.” Charlotte said sweetly. “I’m going to open the bedroom windows, I’ll be right back.” Charlotte pulled Grace into the loft, gave her a hug, and headed off to open more windows.
Stepping into the loft, Grace scanned the beautiful room. Then she saw it. She was shocked. She couldn’t believe it. There, before her, was a wall of photos of Sophie and her adoptive parents and Charlotte. Framed photos of piano lessons, backyard swim parties with family, play dates with friends at the park, camping trips, Christmas memories in front of the tree, a beautiful wedding day, it was all there. A lifetime of happy memories. Grace thought she was going to pass out.
Walking back into the room, Charlotte noticed that Grace was looking at her family photos.
“Oh I see you’ve found some pictures of my family.” Charlotte said, proudly. Trying to hold it together, Grace smiled back at Charlotte.
“What a beautiful little girl.” Grace said, her palms starting to sweat. “What’s her name?”
“That’s my sweet Granddaughter, Sophie. She’s a very special girl. My daughter and my son-in-law adopted her when she was little. She means the whole world to us.” Charlotte gushed. Grace couldn’t handle it anymore. She wanted to scream, she wanted to cry. She could feel herself start to lose it a little. She needed to pull herself together.
“She looks so happy.” Grace said, hiding the sadness and rage in her voice.
“Oh, she’s a wonderful girl. And what’s even better is that I’m going to be a Great Grandmother soon.” And with that comment, everything swirled in Grace’s vision and everything went black.
*GASP* I did NOT see that coming!

Grace didn’t either! She’s totally on the floor passed out!! If you look at the photos, you can see Sophie had the BEST childhood! She’s even married!

I honestly don’t know what you have planned but I’m sending mind waves to Grace to take the GOOD way out and just be super awesome to Charlotte and have her naturally turn the her against Sophie… >:) Kill her with kindness!

Oh my… I can’t believe this! Is Sophie so much older than Grace? Or did she just marry very young?

Sophie is about 20 years old, a little older than Grace. She met and fell in love with a man that worked with her grandfather and they got married. She’s now expecting her first baby.

You know what… for some reason, right now, Grace seems a lot like Evelyn (in Dust to Dust) to me right about now…

I guess so! Both trying to find their way!

Both thinking of themselves, more than feeling happy that others find joy. It’s understandable–and this is not meant as a criticism of either of them, at all. I love them both. I’m just reflecting on Grim’s discussion of Ev, and his views of her selfishness. But, let’s not forget Gaia’s love and compassion–when people are acting selfishly, it’s possible to see that they’re acting like people–the way we can all act, when we’re hurt and not getting what we feel we need–and that’s when kindness, and compassion like Gaia showed, can be needed. And also, sometime’s fate (or Thanatos) provides tough lessons to hope to jar the person out of selfishness. It takes both–fate and compassion, maybe.

This is an interesting observation! Are we taking chapter 54-55 Evelyn? Like, selfish/angry/vengeful/doesn’t know how to let go? I can see a parallel there!

Yup! The one that Thanatos lit into! 🙂 And that Gaia felt compassion for. And that Lucus loved… which reminds me… who loves Grace? (I do. But she’ll need someone in the story to love her and to see her fully, like Lucas did with Ev.)

Yes, Grace needs love! Even if it’s platonic love, it can still be so powerful (like Lucas and Ev, after the breakup). It’s sad to see her so alone 😦 #TeamGrace !

Wait a minute, Wouldn’t Charlotte be a great grandmother because Sophie is her granddaughter?

Nope. Charlotte is Molly’s mom. Molly adopted Sophie. So Charlotte is Sophie’s grandma. Unless I’m missing something?

Oh, poor Grace. It seems she encountered first huge obstacle on her quest for revenge. The worst kind that can put her off – kindness. I wish she found a good solution and didn’t hurt good people on the way. I don’t want to hate her.

Wow! What an awesome observation! I love your insight here in regards to the obstacle of kindness. She’s going to be making some big decisions soon!

I think this is a crucial moment in Grace’s life. I love this dilemma she’s facing. Only life can do this to you. You think you have a clear idea of what is good and what is wrong, until your view of things completely shifts due to something seemingly insignificant. Like meeting the bakery owner in Grace’s case. I’m fascinated by paradigm shifts. It’s an indescribable feeling when you experience it. I’m extremely curious how is this situation going to change Grace. Most impressive moment in the whole season so far, comparable only to Sofia’s betrayal in season 1.

Classic tragedy– she’s just found this incredible (seemingly) job and place to live, which just fell into her lap, but her old bitterness is likely going to poison it for her. It just doesn’t feel like a comedy to me, but maybe I’m wrong?

It is a classic tragedy. I totally agree. And no, it’s far from a comedy. More like a serial drama. I hope this bitterness doesn’t shade the kindness that surrounds her. Thank you for reading and commenting! 🙂
